Youth is not a time of life; it is a sate of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry , fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the sprit back to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of bearty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. 
青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、 心の持ち方を言う。 薔薇の面差し、紅の唇、しなやかな肢体ではなく、 逞しい意思、ゆたかな想像力、炎える情熱をさす。 青春とは 人生の深い泉の清新さをいう。
青春とは怯懦を退ける勇気、 安易を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。 ときには、20歳の青年よりも 60歳の人に青春がある。 歳を重ねただけで人は老いない。 理想を失うとき、初めて老いる。 歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、 情熱を失えば心はしぼむ。 苦悩・恐怖・失望により 気力は地に這い、精神は芥になる。
60歳であろうと、16歳であろうと、人の胸には、 驚異に魅かれる心、 おさな児のような道への探求心、 人生への興味の歓喜がある。 君にも、吾にも見えざる駅逓が心にある。 人から神から 美・希望・喜悦・勇気・力の霊感を受ける限り 君は若い。 サムエル・ウルマン |
